This black bear sow with three cubs of the year (COY) spent a good chunk of August 2013 walking up and down Maligne Lake Road in Jasper looking for berries. In fact, this bear family was so laser-focused on berries, they hardly spent any time in the same spot – and they never, never looked up. So this shot is quite special for me because not only was the light semi-decent, it was also the best shot I have of the family together, as they moved from one berry patch to next, crossing this small dip in the process. The trick to getting it was predicting their path, finding an opening, pre-focusing on a specific spot and crossing my fingers they’d walk into it. They did.
