After a week of watching this grizzly – known as the Hayden Valley Sow – and her two cubs of the year feast on a dead bison 70 yards from the road, the bears left the kill site for good and, as the sun set, crossed the road with only four of our friends – three rangers and one photographer – looking on. It was the perfect end to a remarkable shoot. But as I packed up my gear, Jill noticed the sow had paused on the hillside and was silhouetted against the colourful sky. I scrambled to quickly throw on shorter, faster glass and was in the nick of time, capturing the old bear with her young family saying goodbye, at least to us, for the last time that year.
