A beautiful moment with the Yellowstone grizzly bear known as Raspberry and her two cubs of the year, Rocky and Snow. As she smelled the air, it felt like she was almost giving Jill and me the gift of permitting us to share her territory for that moment. This was the first time we saw her in 2015, a bear that we have seen every year. And I can’t even describe how heartening it was to finally see her with her own cubs after all these years of watching Raspberry grow up. As we sat quietly and safely in our car, sharing this perfect moment with only three others, we watched the setting sun light up the sky and frame our favourite bears to end our first full day in Yellowstone. It’s painful knowing we won’t be visiting Yellowstone or seeing this dear bear in 2016, but this photo – while far from technically perfect – will always be close to our hearts and a reminder of what remains right in the world’s first national park.
