I call this guy Scruffy the Bear. He’s been my friend for the past three summers.
The first year we met, I was suffering from a migraine and ended up taking a nap in my car, while Simon set out to shoot landscape photographs near Floating Island in Yellowstone. When I awoke, I found this lil guy eating peacefully beside my car. He didn’t mind when I sat straight up and started shooting off a few rounds from my camera.
If anyone has ever suffered a migraine (so sorry if you have), my energy and tolerance for the bright sun quickly diminished and I had to collapse back down in the car to continue my napping.
Simon missed everything. He was actually not able to get back to the car since a park ranger and a group of tourists were held 100 yards away as Scruffy continued to eat his flowers beside me in my car.
He eventually wandered off into the sunset, and I awoke feeling much better after my peaceful afternoon (in my car) beside Scruffy, shading him from those dozens of curious eyes.
We were stuck in a ‘bear jam’ and there were about 40-50 people stopped to take photos of him. He surely felt a little crowded and decided to cut through the masses, cross the road and find a more peaceful setting to eat.
Right beside my little red car.
I just had to sit and enjoy his company, while shielding him from the crazy tourists. We both knew the deal. I took a few shots, but then let him dine in the din of my car’s shadow while I just watched.
I’m always there to help. He really appreciates it, I know.
