Though black bear sightings are common in Yellowstone, it’s rare to find a black bear this beautiful, this big and this well lit. Jill and I were doing an early dinner run to the greatest restaurant on Earth, Miner’s Saloon, when we came across this cinnamon-coloured black bear walking the roadside near Yellowstone’s Ice Box Canyon, between Lamar Valley and the Northeast Gate. I took a few photos from the window, but knew Jill wouldn’t be able to stop. So we drove on, turned around, and came back for another round. The ranger on the scene never seemed to realize what we were doing, constantly giving us the thumbs up for taking one shot and leaving. Cheeky, yes, but after years of driving a red car and being waved on through bear jams, it’s nice to enjoy the anonymity provided by our current grey, nondescript Ford.
