In 2014, Jill audaciously asked the photographic God’s for black wolves to appear left, right and centre over the course of our summer. They did, of course, including this elderly member of the Mollie’s Pack near Yellowstone’s Sedge Bay. The beautiful wolf may appear less than perfect in the image due to the collar, but it doesn’t diminish the moment or the shot for me. It’s partly due to the fact we had the encounter to ourselves and partly due to the fact the wolf carried itself with such grace. But mostly, I love this image because it’s the third time I’ve happened upon this black wolf crossing at this exact spot in the road since 2008. I’m happy to see that, with too many wolves dying, this old guy is still with us.
