I’ve written about this encounter before. It was probably my favourite sighting of all time. But do you know what wasn’t my favourite part of this moment? Not having a decent telephoto lens with me. Or being too excited to set my camera up properly. And this is why, despite taking several thousand shots, only a few images can be found in our galleries. But this one is neat, despite being heavily cropped. It’s like a freeze-frame from the movie The Shinning. The cougar would constantly stop its feeding – or dragging of the carcass – to stare across the pond at the highway, where we were gathered. The look chilled to the bone – and not helping matters was the fact his face was covered in blood. Don’t worry cougar, that bighorn is all yours!
