During the summer of 2014, we were fortunate to spend the better part of a month with a remarkable red fox family in Waterton National Park. The multi-week stake-out was an emotional roller coaster ride, as we got to know the personalities of each fox, falling in love with the animals, only to discover one kit hit and killed by a car driving far too quickly by the den site. The mourning process was both extraordinary and heartbreaking, but the hardest part was the nagging feeling that a second kit might have been killed as well. The fox, what we believe to be a male, we named Wise, for maintaining the peace between his two surviving, precocious siblings and for his general maturity. On our last day in Waterton, as we arrived at the den and there was Wise, returning from wherever he had been, resting at the entrance, with the others inside. A perfect ending.
