Of the six trips I’ve made to the land of the spirit bear, this was one of only two that left me with hundreds of incredible images to sort. Spotting this Kermode on the eastern shores of Princess Royal Island early one morning, our guide and a small group of photographers were able to get close to the bear by shooting from a zodiac. Though my gear wasn’t great and the seas were choppy, it was a nice location to combine with the early morning sun – and I was happy with the slides I took for the shoot. Though I was able to see one more spirit bear after this one, photographed at the age of 18, I haven’t seen the bears I spent so much of my life working to save since I was 19 and I haven’t set foot in the land of the spirit bear since the age of 21. I miss it, but the memories endure.
