Jill loves elk. So when we found the mysterious, often hard-to-find herd that calls Waterton home, she wanted to spend quality time watching them graze. We parked the car down what appeared to be a fire access road, and began a short walk through a forest to an opening that we hoped would give us a good view of the elk. About five minutes into our walk, we heard a loud snap and immediately we both reached for our bear spray. But instead of finding one of the park’s numerous black bears, we instead found a beautiful young whitetail deer buck. I was able to snap one quick image before it took off – and it remains one of my few, and possibly my favourite, shot of this species.
