Summer of the Grizzlies
Though we’re still on the road, we’ve slowly started tackling the daunting task of sorting and editing 25k images. And having made a bit of progress, we thought we’d share a few images from our favourite encounter: Two adult grizzlies play fighting (though not during mating season) in a field of wildflowers.
Some of you may remember when we wrote this:
Dreaming of Unicorns
From time to time we proclaim that we want to see something incredible in the wild – something almost unrealistic – and we call it the unicorn dream, because it will never come true.
This morning, we were lucky enough to find the beautiful grizzly boar 126 in Banff eating berries. And I suggested to Jill, I know bear 142 is in the area, what if we found her too? About 10 minutes later, Jill looks in her rearview mirror and spots the grizzly sow.
Pretty cool, right?
I had the audacity to say that it would be even better if they met up.
Okay, how about a little interaction? Some play? A bit of fighting? Too much to ask for?
Well they did it, but it was behind some trees. Would they be willing to do it again in the open?
Okay, how about in better light?
Would it be too much to ask if the bears could move a few hundred yards, into soft light, stand up and jaw at each other, with breath visible, in a field of wildflowers?
Too much to ask? We’ll let you be the judge…
Yes, unicorns do exist.
Stay tuned for more images of the best show we’ve ever seen. And yes, it was better than a cougar eating a bighorn ram.
More to come. Including more of these two grizzlies being feisty, great grey owls flying low along the prairie landscape, and busy beavers building their dams. Wondering if Jill is still lucky with the wolves, you ask? Stay tuned…
Please enjoy a sample from that epic morning. We are still pinching ourselves that it happened.
